Here's my custom wood texture thingy I often use for my own work. You can find a mini explanation that goes with it on my rarely-updated blog: Link to that darn thing.
And by tradition of this thread, here are the technical notes: [TECHNICAL NOTES] There are tons of wood textures on FilterForge, which is not that surprising, nor is that interesting. Each and every one of them is slightly different ... but it makes wood. Wood is simply a good example of what can happen, and I personally think it's a good starting point for beginners to see, observe, and attempt making a texture from the ground up. This simple wood texture is built up of iterations of detail which get blended to formulate its final appearance. We have the base, the mid-ground details, and the fine details. I decided to lay the filter out in the most logical way so it's easily understandable. And generating textures in such a way should come naturally. ![]() |

The filters 30, 32, 34 and 36 are very good!
And the 38 is great! Really very nice 3D effect and design. |

See in terms of your 38th texture it's amazing for a couple reasons.
1. It's a bold design, it knows what it's doing and it stands on the principles of design, not fall out of it. 2. It's not just a "noise pattern", it's a designed pattern. It's interesting and overall looks appealing. There's a charm in the design of it, a sort of slick texture with depth and sense of it. Basically it's appearance exceeds many of what gets submitted to the FilterForge library! Around 80% of the filters in the FF library tend to lack the same level of detail. While it's a subjective matter, there's still a distinct like or dislike amongst the general populous, so it's not entirely "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". We're naturally attracted to what we can relate to and there is an underlying, natural bias towards it even if we're conscious of our decisions. So to me, why the 38th texture beats many are for those reasons. lol kinda said a lot here! hehe. |

Suggestions :
It would be great to develop the idea of the steps. As you can see, in this design there are like steps running around buildings. It would be very nice and interesting to develop it. |
