Hi all.
Just working on my first filter, and seem to have run into a bit of a problem with normal maps. This is the bump map that the filter produces. (looks OK). ![]() And this is the Normal Map generated by Filter Forge. (looks way to noisy) ![]() This is a Normal Map generated in Shadermap Pro (about what I would expect) ![]() And this is the two normal maps applied to a couple spheres (FF on left, SM on right) ![]() Obviously the Shadermap Pro normal map is looking a lot closer to the original bump map. I did read on the forums that applying a very small blur before the height field would help, but it didn't overly effect much in this case. Anyone have any suggestions on how to output a more correct normal map from Filter forge ? I've attached the filter if anyone wants a look. Ta. Grunge_General.ffxml |

If the normal map looks too "noisy", just turn down the "surface height" (the normal map is affected by the surface height, but the bump map isn't). That's the slider on the bottom of the lighting tab. A surface height of ~1 is about what you're looking for. This is a good grunge filter, BTW.

Thanks very much IR, that did the trick nicely.
Glad you like the filter. I wasn't sure how it would be received, as I intended it to be an aid to texturing, rather than the final texture itself. I'll put a few presets together and release it properly. Thanks again. |
