I am still not quite sure how the images work in FF.

There are two ways to work with an image in FF.
1. The Image component, found in the Externals
2. The Color Control (found in the Controls)

What is the difference and when to use one and when the other?

My second concern is how to unload an image. I can load an image (either with the menu : File > Open Image ... or by means of the Color Control component. But how can I unload a loaded image?

My third question : when I have a Result that has partly the Alpha channel not at 100% (or even parts with alpha = 0), then I get the Life Saver image peeking through, even if I save the image. I don't want that. I want the parts where alpha < 1 the be (partly) transparent. I get the Lifesaver shining through in .TIFF as well as in .png saves.
How can I solve this?

First question...If anyone wants to add to this then please do....What you choose to use depends on what you want the filter to do....Using the image component it tiles automatically...While the color control does not....See the image in this post.....
While you can scale and do some things with the loaded image through the image component you have more flexibility with the color component image control........

Here is a filter with the image component Army of Splat

Then one using the color control.....

So if you are creating a basic filter or maybe a filter that takes an image and does some processing effect/distortion to it then perhaps the image component will do....

To unload an image in the color control click on the drop-down arrow next to the image showing for that control...Its in the settings section of the filters settings......This is if you are in the main window of FF....If you are in the editor click the little window under the result component to get to the main settings for the filter......
From there choose to unload image....Then click the resulting color that now fills the control and choose alpha to be 0.....

When in the filter editor choose filter controls under the results component....

Then the third question is done through the menus......Go to "New Image" and choose your size that you want and click the background color and set the alpha to 0....This way the background will be transparent......The other difference you will see about the Image versus Color control and loading an image is you can only load one image at a time with the Image component....While the color component you can load multiply images as long as you have a color component per image.....

Thank you, CFandM, for your clear answers.
I get it all and everything concerning my questions is solved.

I have an additional question though :

Are the images used (loaded) at the time a preset is made, being recorded into the preset? Meaning that I get errors when I open a filter and the images that where loaded once (when making the preset), but are not longer present on a known path (e.g. folder has different name or external hd where images are located is not connected). Could this be the explanation that I often get error messages and have to quit FF and throw away the 'Recent.xml' file (in the Application Support Folder (Mac OSX))?

Speaking of Presets : is there a way to assign names or numbers to the presets?
I'd like to put the Filter + Preset used into the name of a new file (image), as to be able to retrieve how I did it later on. Now I count the presets and base a number on that. But then I can never delete a preset, as the numbering would move down one number. Also, when having a lot of presets, it's a pain in the *** to count as to which number the preset should have.

You are welcome...Glad to help.....

Yep the path to the image is recorded with the preset....If that image has moved FF will give an error and default to a color for that control instead of the default image....i use windows so it might give a different error on osx where you have to do that.....
You could always run a test and create a quick filter with a preset to an image...Then close out of FF and move that image and open FF back up and see what happens when you select that filter.....No harm to the filter or FF since its just a test filter......

Also when submitting filters to the library one has to check to make sure that any links to external images are not saved in the presets....

Nope no numbering....

Thanks CFandM. As the behavior of the presets has serious implications in my opinion, I will start a new thread on Presets.

If I have an image loaded through a Color Control component and parts of the Result have an Alpha < 1, then the image that is loaded through the menu is peeping through.

CFandM has explained how to unload an image loaded into a Color Control component, but I cannot find to unload an image loaded through the main menu, except by quitting FF and restarting. There must be an easier way, I hope smile:-)
