I'm wondering if this filter could be used (in a musically useful way) in a synth like this WNAdditive that imports .bmp files of spectrographs. I'll have to try it this week. Meanwhile, if you get a chance ThreeDee, maybe take a quick look at that synth webpage and let me/us know what you think of mapping graphics for sounds in that way, since you seem to be doing some sort of similar type of filters here this past week or two.

Surprisingly works as a real histogram!

Hi jffe, Certainly could. Do you know of any free software synths that similarly do additive synthesis from input images? I'd be rather interested in seeing how it works, since I use synths and samplers, MIDI and stuff to make noises. Since the website doesn't go into any detail about how this works, could you explain it a bit? I take you start with a basic oscillator waveform, like a sine or square wave and create the overtones from the spectral image. I would also assume it only needs one channel of information. Do I have that right? Or does color have some bearing on the result? TD |

TD, I really couldn't tell you all that much about it, I do own that synth but I've only dabbled with the .jpg/.bmp import feature and used the built in modifiers for it. You can grab the demo click here to download though, and mess with it some if you have the time & interest.
![]() There are some other synths out there that do picture importing as a sound/osc source, but they all tend to suck and not be usable since they are too basic and/or rely on that for the entire root of the sound. I am thinking the WNA synth does not exactly do it that way, but again I am not 100% sure exactly how that feature works as I had little to no success with it when I tried a couple years back. jffe Filter Forger |
