Personally, I think the best way to learn FF is by studying existing filter constructions.....with alot of testing and experimentation.....

I've been working on the filter some more, and think I've improved it a bit by adding some tonal variations, better remapping on a few of the controls, etc (and I'll update the filter with those sometime in the next day or two). But you're right; it often turns a little dark, in part because of the slider that lets you tune how much of the rock has discolored and darkened.

I'll see what I can do to brighten it up a little; I should be able to hook a levels adjustment onto the diffuse map, or maybe bundle that adjustment into one of the earlier noise steps.
