this is with the surface height set at the default 20. this is one of the problems with doing height filters. every little change in the height maps is magnified quite a bit. what we really need is 16 or 32 bit height map to smooth this stuff out and make better transitions between height values. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

wouldn't a touch of blur solve that on the height map

hi all. yes i've been away. i decided to put FF back on the shelf until v2.0 comes out, but now i'm not sure if i'll live that long
this filter is pretty sensitive, it doesn't do well with skin. although a bit of blur might help, i think some preliminary work on the image, like a smart blur or some manual smoothing, would take care of some of the bumps. however, a poor job will be very visible after the filter is applied, as any new boundaries will be magnified. and as for smart blur, well, this filter turns gradients into steps. though in the end, i like the lumpy skin effect. the image Kraellin posted above is very cool
anyway i realized it would work great with simple images of solid colors, so i tried it on some video game sprites and they turned out pretty neat! i'm making more this weekend. i'm going to try out the new batch processing feature, it should speed things up a bit

hi garbanzo,
would be very cool if you could get the overall depth on an image like i posted without the fine changes on the near stuff, like the skin. in other words, the skin would remain relatively smooth while the overall facial features would have depth compared to each other. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

so just blur the highlights and leave the detail in the darks? i could give it a shot. but i have to say, it's been so long since i used FF, it all seems foreign to me now
but it's prolly like riding a bike, eh?
it would be cool though, you're very right. i always thought this filter had potential, simple as it is.

i'm not sure a blur would work. it might, but i think i've tried that before with only minimal success. worth trying again, though, i suppose.
hmmm, i suppose you could isolate the highs and just apply the height to everything but those. that might do it...somewhat. it's a good question. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

no, then you'd have to deal with the boundary.
i'll think on it. have to install FF again... maybe i'll have some time this weekend to mess around. hmm now i'm gonna get sucked right back in to this addiction, i just know it

you could mask the highlighted blurred areas with the threshold of the darker areas

sorry guys, but i really don't have the time to get back into this right now. too much going on. if anyone thinks they can fix this one up, please take it and do so. i'm not at all possessive about my filters. especially not this one, it's a very basic setup, nothing too creative going on in there

hi garbanzo,
i took you up on your offer and began modding this. i mostly added components rather than changing anything you already had. i did change your re-map on the blur on the height to add just a little more. you had it set at max 1; i set it up to max 5, i think. i also added a levels after this to re-define the blur a bit. that may sound like a contradiction, and i'm probably stating it wrong, but it seems to work.
i also added some other extraction types. in fact, i added all of them, since each gives a slightly different black and white and just put all those on a switch as options.
i also re-mapped the brightness/contrast component because FF's bright/cont doesnt work exactly like psp's or ps's and i was getting some very 'dirty' looking results. this part still needs work as youj'll see in the attached.
i also added a reflectivity control based on the b&w extraction. hehe, that one can produce some fun
so, here's the result in the most extreme settings: If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

now, i know that looks pretty ugly, but remember, i said with the extreme settings on full. it can be cut back all the way to almost the original look of the image. it's also not finished. i still want to remove those dark areas that got added and yet still control the height to nearly as much as it is now. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

ok, here's one that's not set to the extreme but shows some decent dimension: If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
