Usually, when I start a User Gallery thread, I also subsequently submit the filter. Once it has been polished and hammered into shape with the help of community feedback, that is. It's a very helpful routine...

I'm planning some additional features for this filter's future:
- Coastal cliffs. - Hills & mountain ranges (probably needs bombers, but we'll see). - More refined compass rose design. - City icons. (Maybe) - More border designs. (Maybe) --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Hi Carpadilla,
Was just thinking I think I'm going to map a really nice map (put lots of work into it) when I make my web space. Use one as a site map~ I like~ Loves it~ This was just a quick map to give basic idea of use nothing fancy, but could be done up very nice. Thanks for making the filter~ ![]() |

Nice one, Persidio, and you are welcome!
![]() I'd love to see what you come up with for your 'site' map. Regarding the 'Land of Filter Forge' map, there are several locations of absolute importance that we must not omit: - the "Filter Forge", an ancient monumental temple that houses the mythical "Result component", from which sprang forth the whole of creation. Legend has it that a mysterious group of beings called "FF Team" make it their home, instructing those who seek knowledge of the art of 'filter authoring'. Since ancient times, the Filter Forge has been a place of pilgrimmage for all aspiring filter weavers of the world. - the "Editor's Pick", a huge spear shaped tower that houses the hallowed halls of "The Editors" aka "Knights of the Golden Pick". The Editors are a sacred order that guards the balance of creation by hunting down all renegade 'Filter Weavers' that turn against the 'Codex of Gentle Filtration'. - the "Filter Library", that is said to contain every filter every created. - the "Halls of Vlad", where the sacred 'Rod of Generality +255' is enshrined, spreading its 'Aura of Generality' over the known lands. Named after the most famous of the "Knights of the Golden Pick". - the "Snippet Isles" (namely Uber, Quasi and Ro), island domain of the mysterious three Snippeteers, guardians of the arcane. Travelers beware, for these islands are infested with the dreaded 'sock-puppets', who are generally not amused, mad 'curve-ops' and even worse. - the "Sherry", a zone of wild natural media brush filtration that slowly spreads across the lands. Widely regarded as the best photo shooting location because of its marvelously 'handdrawn' and 'painted' landscapes. - the "White Dove", the famous port and capital city where the yearly contest for "Queen of FF" is held. Ruled by Miss Congeniality. - the "Worley Distortion", a giant maelstrom. All ye who seek the "Filter Forge" have to brave it! & last but not least: - "Lounge Lizard", a titanic leather sofa that roams the lands to and fro, never to be found in the same location twice. Home of Crapadilla and his bodyguard platoon of fruity strawberry cyborgs. ![]() ![]() Did I forget anything? ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

What a wonderful filter and it's great to see every one having fun with it already! Love the list of locations Crapadilla and Persidio thought up the Land of Filter Forge, the injokes are awesomely hilarious, especially the Worley Distortion maelstrom ^_^
Hmmm... the only thing that seems missing in the concept land of filter forge is a place where everybody picks up their obligatory first Life Preserver to take to the Filter Forge on their pilgrimage -- after beating them into submission apparently first (In my whacked out imagination, the Life Preservers are all alive -- and focus on self-preservation -- but alas, their lack of external limbs limits their general lifespan) ^_- -Zephos |

Excellent. So an aspiring 'effect' filter weaver's first task is to hunt down one of these elusive creatures for use in his lab, so he can gain a weaving license and have a guinea pig to test out new 'filtrations' (i.e. filter magic). Due to their dependance on the life preserver, 'effect' filter weavers are generally looked down upon by elitist 'texture' filter weavers, who have mastered the art of creating filtrations out of the very horror of emptyness. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

ah, Kraellin Cove, land of the waterfalls and soap bubbles
![]() lookin good, dilla. i do hope you add more elements to this. and oddly, this discussion got me thinking about a web site i saw a few years back. it was based on original wolfenstein game. the web pages were each a view of the old wolfenstein halls and rooms. as you picked a direction you got a new page with a new view of where you had 'moved' to from the last page. this whole map layout thing got me thinking of that again and another similar web site which was a 3d gallery. each page of the site was another room or wall of the gallery. steve has been bugging vlad for a better gallery for our filters with more images created from those filters posted along with the filter and presets. so, wouldnt it be interesting to have a virtual 3d gallery for FF filters and images created using those filters. the mind boggles ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Another excellent work. To my tastes, it has too many controls which makes it unstable when randomized on Medium and High, but I like it anyway.

This has got to be one of my all-time favorite filters at FF......extremely clever and well thought out!!!
I don't know why.....but your recent "old folded paper" post in the user gallery got me to thinking that the colorizations and "old world" details of this filter would look pretty good with the creases and discolorizations......and maybe with some singed and burnt areas......like a really old folded up treasure map or parchment...... I agree that the filter themes of "Cartography" and "Old Paper" would go well together.
However, when setting out to build a filter, I always nail it down to a precise area of expertise. This filter's area of expertise is cartographer's shading and inking while "Old Paper" focuses on simulating aged paper. Marrying the two would probably result in a badly randomizing filter with a huge mess of controls. I'd rather the user did the blending himself in his image editor of choice. To this end, however, I could make the limited paper simulating part of this filter optional so the user could turn it off to be able to properly blend it with some other paper texture. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

![]() it's also pretty easy to just do two renderings, one with each filter and blend them in a paint program. you could probably also add in one of those torn edge filters as well. so, where's the X on the map for the treasure? That is cool looking
![]() I think it's the colors on the lead preset that had me thinking about it.....maybe that orangy-brown with a darker brown in place of the green hue as the paper base.....then the darkest browns (and maybe some black singed areas) in the creases, along the edges, and some arbitrary areas..... I'm surprised that no one has done a really good charred/singed edge effect yet....I think a jagged block noise type of blending might do the trick ![]() Steve
