+2 The threshold control on this one makes for some unique applications. The heavy bar effects are my favorite.....

Thanks guys, I usually just use shapes for the metallic stuff, but seeing all of Stevie's recent metal filters made me want to try and do something with a picture input, so blame him, and those old Toadies freebee Photoshop filters eh.

interesting filter, jffe. gonna have to try that one out too.
and steve, that's a very interesting pic. i wonder if you could get the flower portion to look a bit more like it was being strained through the metal grid, or maybe growing through it more. i can see that somewhat now, but seeing more of the grid in the internal portions of the flower might be very cool. still, a great image there. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I'm kinda working on one tentatively called "Glass Grid View", similar in theory, just more glass than metal, and smaller grid lines sometimes.

LOL.... Believe it or not, it's not the metal..... It's the threshold effect with the larger grid.....which looks like the image continues behind the grate.....as though the grate goes through it in 3D.....

The melting part seemed incidental, I think it's from the threshold component, and my (semi-random) wiring, almost a happy accident overall. Just experiment more, and you'll find that crap. I knew zero when I started, and refused to look inside people's filters til my 8th or 10th one, took the profile grad from CF, and that was the basis for 2-3 metallic filters, then I didn't look again til I wanted to do a frame filter about 35-40 filters in). Then I took the metallic shine from angelboi, and the frame/alpha from umm, photoman maybe. If you don't mind looking at people's wiring, you can pass me up in 4 weeks easy, and probably catch up to almost anyone cept maybe uber, northern, cf, and zephos, in 8 weeks ha-ha Seriously, I was stubborn for no reason cept my inner voice, and that's why it's taken me roughly 640 hours of time, to get anywhere with FF, unecessary ego tripping, which I continue to do, because it's my preferred approach. Creativity is a long road, but there are shortcuts for the willing, just so you, and you all, know.

Funny you say that.....because I have been doing the exact same thing all along. I haven't chopped anything from anyone else's filters yet.....and that's why they are all relatively simple and not beyond my skill level. I made myself do it that way so I would learn everything from the ground up without cutting any corners. I think that it has also payed off in discovering some neat simple effects that have been passed over.....I guess making me sort of the clean-up crew I was really surprised to find that no one had done anything like my metal, glass, chrome, and solar filters.....
I think that today with my "HeavyMetal" filter is the first time that I've actually come straight out and asked for help on a filter.....

I thought I'd add my ten bobs worth to the conversation - being border line thick I found my first filter which I submitted were horrendous mass of unnessecary components and wiring taking ridiculous ten minutes upwards to render - I'd see others filters, [theirs some huge brains here ] and realized I would have to open them up to learn the ins & outs of construction with the goal of creating original filters from acquired knowledge, otherwise I would still be making abortions - admittedly my filters [ and myself ] are only a hair above newbie and my filter are well below masterpieces but this has certainly helped along with People like StevieJ, Kaellin, uberzev {god I hope I spelt his name right } and others making great suggestion for improving my filter along with my own discoveries, but rightly or wrongly I still feel it is my own creativity which has driven the concepts for the filter. Art is all about accumulation, recycling and reinterpetation it is an unescapable reallity, filtered through our own brains to come up with an "original" thought. As you were, rant over.

Carl, yeah, I didn't mean sound like looking inside other people's filters was "cheating" or something, hell, if anything, I was saying it's a shortcut if you want it, if you let it be. I just haven't let it be very much for myself, and I'm saying that's why i'm not very far with FF 6 months later. People should do whatever works for them, as long as they are reaching forward in their own way, it's all good eh. Thanks about the "glass" filter, I'm still tweaking it a bit.

jffe oh god I didn't mean it as an attack on your values or system, you've created some excellant filters it was more an expression of my own needs. I often do not exspress myself well [ or spell well ] if anything I admirer your approach and what you have acheived - re reading my post I can see how I sound. I still find it foreign to communicate in such a fashion, it's very different from normal inter-reaction with a person - the set in stone nature of posting, the nature of debating or conversation and the fact that I'm as deep as a puddle and as thick as a brick sometimes is my only excuse........... ----Carl, I didn't take it as an attack at all, I was just saying that I do it the way I do it, because I just feel like doing it that way, and that others should do whatever works for them as far as creating filters and all. No worries there. Posting on forums, emails, chats, it's all a new thing for most of us, some newer than others maybe. But even after 10 years online, I often times go back and read something I've typed, and think to myself, where the hell was I going with that post or comment, or where did that thought even come from and why did I type it out and hit *enter* ha-ha.
----Stevie, yeah I admit I've borrowed/stolen a couple ideas I needed for filters, I'm not dead set against using tools that others have made, it's more about wanting to just see if I could do it my own way, or figure out what they figured out ya know. Eventually, the time spent on the problem becomes no longer worth it, and you either abandon the dream, or alter your method to achieve the goal. And since no one had to be injured or ripped off financially, I figured it'd be o.k. to copy some wiring and get on with life a couple times ha-ha. According to Google, Michael Berens and Pablo Picasso, are both quoted as saying "Good artists borrow, great artists steal." I have no idea who first said it, I just read it somewhere years ago, and for better or worse, it stuck in my mind.

----Ghost Grid is pretty simple really, and I'm not just saying that, there's not much to it, (or at least it's not radically different inside from the metal & glass ones), I just thought it made some pics look kinda cool so I submitted it.
----"Glass Grid View" has been submitted, so you might take a look at that one whenever it shows up in the system, it's a slight variation of the metal grid one.

----I did, check out the *Ghost Grid* update from the other day, it really adds the melted-gridding stuff now, although popular forum opinion seems to be that it looks like "melted wax grid" ha-ha. I also did a minor update for *Glass Grid View*, which was supposed to be *Metal Grid Melter* but with a glass look instead of metal, although it doesn't do the melted in grid look anywhere near as well, and might as well be called *Boring Glass Grid Crappy Filter* ha-ha

----Thanks. It's still doing alright really, especially for a kind of "grungey" type filter, although come to think of it, most of the flat/nontexture grunge filters do as good or better. I would update it again, but I doubt there's much to be added/changed without ruining it's random charm, so I better not for now.

Yeah, about 5 of them.....a couple with very few downloads on them. I haven't checked, but I think I'm up to 18 or 20 HUs now. I did have one casualty that went from high to low overnight.....one person must have been using the hell out of it, then ubruptly stopped using it altogether

----More of those, falling like a brick ones ha-ha. I have about 4 or 5 stalled out between pages 15-25 or so, a 1/3 above those in average usage pergatory, and 6-8 new low usage ones that just fell hard and fast whenever they did. I don't really care that much, but it is fun to update something and see that it gets more use after that, and seeing something go from page 26 to page 87 overnight is depressing in a vague way ha-ha.

Well, as a result of getting the "kiss-of-death" Lows, I'm putting more thought into submitting more generally useful filters. I don't like seeing the "L" word on them......even though they are still viable effects. I think Dilla has the right approach.....do only one at a time, take your time, put some thought into it, pay attention to the details, and don't submit it until you are completely satisfied with everything about it..... A lot of filters just get over-looked, liked literally, for instance, I did an update but it got bumped off the frontpage within an hour, it might as well not have happened as far as anyone new seeing it. And of course some of the low usage doesn't even deserve what little usage it got ha-ha. Other than editor's picks and stuff is just obviously really good, most of the average stuff (which is most of the library) gets over-looked to some degree. That said, improving something in a big way and then talking about it and showing examples etc., is still a viable way to raise it from average usage to high usage. Ultimately, like any big success, a lot goes into it, but ya can't go wrong with quality to start with eh.

True.....I'm finding it's all in reading the majority of users and what they want.....and getting the proper keywords on it so they can find it. I really don't think 'exposure' has all that much to do with it anymore.....because I've submitted some sleepers with absoloutely no exposure, attention, or comments that users have found and turned HU quickly......
