Most excellent DJI!

(If I can make a suggestion - if you want it even more excellent, take your "dimples" pattern and then use an Offset filter to displace the dimples around the spherical surface! Classic filters like the Soccer Ball filter can show you how!)

Thanx for your comment and suggestion CaliCoastReplay. smile:D I'll look into that. smile:) Also i think the edges could bend back just a hair more to make it look really spherical. I myself couldn't get it. Maybe someone else can show us the way. smile:)

This is very good and realistic and well done effect, but I have the feeling that the ball is not really spherical and looks more like a well done golf ball texture that has been cut and added a vignette, I mean that there are already available some very good snippets or filters that makes real spherical balls with textures, so from my own point I would suggest to test and try to make it more spherical, but this is of course my own point of view and you may like more the effect as it shown here.

You know, I couldn't get it either, it gives me something more akin to the top of a golf ball.

I might have to learn the Map Script function to write a small "skinner" that reinterpolates x and y coordinates around a heightmap. Surprised there isn't one yet.

I got it! I used ThreeDee's Spherica technique.

I am only a humble servant on this stuff, I figure I owe most of the good stuff I know to ThreeDee and a few of the other masters at this point, but this is the filter and snippet for spherical displacement...

Wow, I just can't stop.

To paraphrase Penny Arcade...is there a point at which one hits "maximum golf ball" and can't get any golfballier than that?

I think you absolutely nailed that enamel finish!

Would you be open to forking the filter if I released mine as "Putt-Putt Golf Ball"? I did a lot more work on my own variant, I'll give you the license if we win a free copy!

( forking?). I hold no copyright on pictures of sports equipment,so upload whatever you like. It looks like you've added color to yours. That makes it a more flexible filter than mine. There's room for everybody's balls here on Filter Forge.com smile:)

Nice blue golf ball. smile;)
Then.... making the holes deeper, or hexagonal, adding a pattern on the surface or inside the holes could be an idea too.

Yeah, I have considered all those things too, Ram. Real golf balls, I noted, have dimples that are as hexagonal as they are circular.

lol want the most pickiest critique that I don't think people should care too much about?

Number of dimples on a golf ball: 336. So this should be showing half of that lol.

ATTENTION TO DETAILS FRIENDS. It's what makes FilterForge amazing.

LOL.

Yeah, I did count the holes on the internet. Magic. Boom.

In all seriousness I think you got a pretty nice thing going. smile;) If I have time, I want to offer a 4.0 version of those components used to make the golfball texture look round. They're currently 1.0 so... it's a bit out of date. [Edited several times]

Well folks I think this upd ate worked out nicely. However i'll need to update one more time because I happen to be looking at some golf balls on the net. and I notest that some golf balls have dimples that are slightly square with rounded corners. So i'll need to add a corners slider. Here's what I mean.Default prese t with square dimples.

Dimple picky police here. Think you got the right observation going but just not the right formation.

As Ramlyn mentioned earlier in this thread, they're actually hexagonal more than a square.

When you have 1 circle surrounded by 6 circles, the intersecting formation is a hexagon. This can be seen throughout nature, like in beehives, bubbles, interacting fluids, even on saturn there's a hexagonal formation. Hexagons do a great job reducing air turbulence as well.

Hint for creating a hexagonal pattern: Use a profile gradient and kaleidoscope. However, this results in crisp hexagonal patterns which you'd need to blur out to get rounded formations. Using any bitmap-based operation (such as the blur component) IS very time consuming. Not that it's wrong, just something I wouldn't do that for a filter made public since most people are here for speed and flexibility. So I highly recommend constructing hexagons using profile gradients! smile;)

This thread is way too long for a piddly flop little filter like this one. If the stinking thing doesn't look absolutely true to life then so be it. I have nothing more to say on the subject.

I swear, you really made it better over the iterations. And please don't say "stinking thing" it's not a stinking thing at all and you got yourself a happy crowd who helped you build this filter. You made a filter that made us talk and it encouraged us to talk in detail. Maybe you don't appreciate a bombardment of nit-picky suggestions but I comment out of respect for what you make and not because I see something wrong.

I don't know... I've been a nit-picky bastard since I was a kid and I'm a nit-picky designer now. I get picked on by my coworkers, my clients, friends, and I pick them back by being meticulous. I know we all have our own backgrounds in life and I respect individuals for that matter. At least this isn't an anonymous crowd bashing people's hard works to bits. The internet can be a very disrespectful place.

And just a note, I do enjoy seeing your work. I just hope you don't take any of these suggestions as "blatant criticism".

You also don't have to pick up every suggestion and answer them. You can always just "incubate" suggestions and later apply them to whatever other work you're working on. It's, after all, better to have commentary and suggestions by a bunch of others than to have none.

So with love and respect.

Fine, since you put that way i'll try not to take offense. I just really hate it when people look over my shoulder and start making comments about somthing i'm working on. So it's not you personally,it's just whoever does it. Oh,and I don't need your love pal, just your respect. smile:)

This is exactly the internet thing / problem. Everybody on the internet don't exactly know each other, and plus the fact that we publish things for others makes it kinda vulnerable to any sort of discussion. But in terms of all that, given we don't really know anybody online I think it makes us all equals in terms of commentary. I think the key point here is that what's made public is basically open to discussion and at that we're really on our own once it's out there. At least FF forums is a bit more tangible (to me).

Anyhoo please continue making what's just best.

I'm still caught up on this "Dimple Police" concept. I think we all rejected this idea too early in the discussion. smile:D

Can I do similar inspections on other kinds of dimples? Maybe female dimples? smile:D (Before you ask, yes, I'm a terrible person. smile8) )
