Here's a bit of critique. Technically this filter looks cool and I thought I saw some potential in it. The construction, however, is not so great. The setup basically isn't as efficient and doesn't make use of previous components. And given that the filter is narrows it to "stars" you only get stars which is limited in functionality. See, the thing is, I see so much potential in this that I really would appreciate if its reconstructed a bit so it's A) efficient. B) Produces more than just stars as its result.
I think what you have is cool, improving those areas will help this filter really get somewhere instead of being hidden behind all those other filters that barely get used because they don't help anybody excepting the author him or herself. I just don't like seeing filters that have potential to dust away. And like I keep saying over and over... this one really, I think has potential, and I'll just kinda give you a bit of help on making this a little more interesting, fun, and useful. ![]() |

Hi Skybase. Thank you so much for your critique of my filter. I do appreciate it very much.
![]() I agree with you on this one. I worked really hard at this filter, but I did have some issues with it. One of the main problems was I didn't know how to make the star (or what ever shape) to also become invisible like the background. When I shut it off (the star) it then shows the sprayed background as a solid mass. I understand why this is, because I did this in layers. What I don't understand, is how to correct this. You will have to forgive me as I am still learning this entire process and I'm really green behind the ears on these things. I really like the entire stenciled spray paint look that this makes, but if you have some suggestions on improving this filter I would really like to hear, and see what you suggest. Please feel free to tear it apart and show me what you would do to make it more versatile for other as well as myself. I can always use a helping hand. I'm off to work right now, but will be back this evening. I hope to hear what you suggest soon. Later Mardar. ![]() |

Mardar ... You know I wasn't sure what to comment on your filter at first. I recognized it right away as what a stencil looks like after you have dabbed some paint through the opening. I thought it looked cool, but like Skybase I wasn't sure how it would be used. Six seconds later I slapped my head and said "Wallpaper!" (like that strange little pattern on kitchen wall on King Of The Hill).... Then I said "maybe a fabric pattern" Then I thought of a half dozen other possibilities ... That is was making art is, letting your imagination rule your world .... keep doing that and making fun filters. I can tell making filters is fun for you and it is fun seeing what you come up with ....

![]() I thought I'd just go in and give the filter a bit of cleanup and twist. The filter's now capable of not only producing stars but other polygonal shapes as well. In addition, the source can be also an image!! ![]() The render times on my machine are hanging around 3 seconds on 600x600. Not bad I think ![]() I'm just doing this to demonstrate how you can really make a linear filter into something that can be versatile and useful for everybody. Generally the idea is that if you're going to submit it to the library, you want the filter to work so people have control over the output so they get what they want. Sometimes (myself included) produce really specific filters that produce only one result. This is cool if the output is awesome always, but it can be limiting and the general populous probably appreciates something they can at least change something on. So given that, I thought I'd just take it appart and put it back together the way I'd do. The important thing though is that this is your work and your idea. I just thought I'd help out on some awesome filter idea you had. ![]() I don't know if this suits what you waned to do originally, the filter is now super versatile and can produce many different results. It might be totally different from your original idea but you know... that part is just me hehe. ![]() Sprayed Stars - Remixed copy.ffxml |

There are some problems that still need to be addressed: 1. Given the fact that I added "spray size" parameter, the image clips in cases where if the spray size is over 70. Solution can be to make a remapped output for controls so the scale of it gets affected as spray size increases (just so it keeps it in bounds.) 2. Image mode isn't that interesting
![]() So you know... there are tons of stuff that can happen. Keep filterforging. Awesome! ![]() |

Gene, Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes FUN is my top priority every day that the spirits let me open my eyes to the world again.
![]() ![]() Skybase, I am overwhelmed(and overjoyed) by what you have done with my filter. I have just scanned under the hood and it is a bit more than I am use to, BUT I never back down from a learning challenge, so I will dive into this in the next few days and I will understand what you have done. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the suggestions and encouragement to improve on this filter. I may have some more question as I go along with this, so I hope you don't mind if I call on you for some help. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
