Hey Everyone,

I was looking for a very cool Fractal Picture to post off of the net, type in Fractal Art, sit back & check out some of the awesome art, most all of it is copyrighted so I did not want to post it. The reason I was doing this is, I love Filter Forge, it is such a Super Cool program, all computer artists need this program, anyway, I wanted to state, with a cool posted Fractal Art pic., that" Some day it will be here at Filter Forge"! Well here I was enjoying all the cool Fractal Art...
http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=f...386-v6.jpg

then bingo,.down towards the bottom... LOL... smile:) ..I was in the group...WOW.!No Steve,this is not a self promotion.. smile:D I was so surprised to see my filter there, I wanted to thank the Filter Forge Team for the publicity, it made me feel, well, good. Funny I was working on a NEW Fractal Art Filter today. smile;)

Have a good evening. smile:)

It looks like it just comes down to this:

{x,y,z}^n = r^n { sin(theta*n) * cos(phi*n) , sin(theta*n) * sin(phi*n) , cos(theta*n) }
...where:
r = sqrt(x^2 + y^2 + z^2)
theta = atan2( sqrt(x^2+y^2), z )
phi = atan2(y,x)
{x,y,z}+{a,b,c} = {x+a, y+b, z+c}
r = sqrt(x*x + y*y + z*z )
theta = atan2(sqrt(x*x + y*y) , z)
phi = atan2(y,x)
newx = r^n * sin(theta*n) * cos(phi*n)
newy = r^n * sin(theta*n) * sin(phi*n)
newz = r^n * cos(theta*n)

FF has all those operations now. If I just had a clue I could connect it up and have killer renders by lunch. damn me and my cluelessness. smile:evil:

Since there is no reason you could not use that math to output vertices rather than bitmap locations, we should be seeing a movie takes place on a set that looks like this:

I like your rendition of my post. StevieJ's Super Art Filter. Awesome! smile;)

Hey Ron & Carl,

Cool Fractals Ron, lots of very cool fractal art out there!
Like I said: Some day it will be here at Filter Forge! smile;)

Here is another render of the same unfinished filter.

Have a GREAT day! smile:)

Hey RonJ smile:) the image that I posted was created directly from your first posted pic here.....the gradient transition of colors helped nicely to self-create the texture.....but of course used a super-secret StevieJ 3-component FF filter from the vault..... smile:| ..... smile:dgrin:

I don't know how you are going to make it without FF.....my head would spin 360 degrees like in The Exorcist.....then explode like in Scanners..... smile;) smile:D LOL..... smile:)

Mr. Ron Viers smile:) .....I'm in LOVE with the pic you posted below.....the combination of different fractal patterns mapped on a 3D scape is totally awesome.....trying to see if I can create "faux" 3D scapes with just FF.....having some success.....but looks like it will be easier, faster, and be able to create much more interesting scapes using either 3ds Max, Blender, or Free Space.....unless FF breaks into true 3D..... smile:devil:

Damn!!! This is frick'n intriguing!!! ..... smile:devil:

It is even simpler: the formula is repeated several times in that quote.

I made a modified version for 2 dimensions and fed the LP into it.

It's a start, now it needs some navigation controls. This is just staring straight down the middle, so to speak.

It's not really the same 3D object as in those pictures, rather a 2-dimensional slice used for remapping. Making it 3D would be very interesting. I assume running a loop with different z-values and using the max value would be a good start.

Here's the filter:

Hey ThreeDee,

I have not joined the Script Club as yet, but your post above is VERY COOL.
That image, 2 up above your post that Steve was raving about is Awesome.
I don't think you can get that out of Filter Forge2.0, might be 6.0 with Turbo Boost.? smile;)

I ran your Fractal 1.ffxml with my filter strictly just for fun, to see what would happen. smile;) Very COOL! You are on the right track.

Have a good evening, smile:)

ThreeDee, what do they mean when they say it is the 8th order? Is each order like what you are calling another iteration?

I believe so. Maybe there is some braoder meaning to the term, but at least I would think they mean that the function uses the 8th power in it. Or, if it goes through the formula several times over, it has been put through it 8 times.

Thanks. It's exciting to see what that thing will look like when you add navigation. Will each new iteration increase the evaluation time linearly?

this slightly altered version of his formula will give you the cross section of a given z

local n = 8
local r = 0

local theta = 0
local phi = 0

while ((r <= radius) and (iteration < MAX_ITERATION) ) do

r = math.sqrt(x^2 + y^2 + z^2)
theta = n * math.atan2(math.sqrt(x^2 + y^2) , z)
phi = n * math.atan2(y,x)
x = x + r^n * math.sin(theta) * math.cos(phi)
y = y + r^n * math.sin(theta) * math.sin(phi)
z = z + r^n * math.cos(theta)

iteration = iteration + 1
end;

Damn. Everything I do gives me a malformed script error. It's because I do not have time to go through the basics tutorial.
I have two python projects I have to get through then I want to start picking up lua. For now I will just have to watch what everyone else is doing.

Indeed!!! Can this really be done??? Create 3D environments with 3D objects, fractals, map textures, etc??? I'm following everything you guys are doing with scripts.....and to be perfectly honest, I'm getting pretty excited about the possibilities..... smile:devil:

Yeah Steve, after seeing the stuff done by Daniel White, like the mystery cave, I'm not interested in 2d fractals anymore.

You'll get it Steve. Hang in there. It *will* be worth it. smile:)

Same here.....you can pull some neat stuff out of 2D fractals using FF's limitted "Z" lighting height.....but 3D looks sooooo much more interesting.....even when rendered through FF.....

Hey Everyone,

Lots of good info. there.
ThreeDee,
Very Cool, Almost Fractal, post page 1!

Carl,
I just know you are into this!

Sphinx.
Thank you very much for your help.

Ronviers,
You are on track,I know you got it!

Steve,
You are writing all of this down I can feel it!

WOW! So many great minds at work!
If one could harness all that creativity & hook up to it!
Remindes me of that old movie with Jim Carrey, ---something about brain waves...

A test of another Fractal Filter I am working on.

Have a GREAT weekend everyone! smile:)
