It's about time we catered to newly arriving would-be filter creators, don't you think? Questions arise often as to where some tutorials on learning FF might be found, but - let's face it - there aren't that many around, and they're not available in any single location.

That's why I thought it might be nice to have the Beginner's Cookbook, a place for the FF community to collect all those tidbits of basic filter cuisine knowledge and distill it into delicious mini-tutorials for easy consumption.

All seasoned authors are hereby invited to participate and bake their knowlegde into wiki format. In the name of good filtration, let's ramp up the wiki use and create some gourmet recipes!

Snippet authors are welcome to explain their favorite snippets and devote a recipe to them!

All newcomers to FF and would-be filter creators are hereby encouraged to give feedback, constructive criticism, chime in with wishes for recipes, etc. Let's hear ermmm... read it!

do you want this as a version 1 book only or do you also want version 2 stuff in there?

I'd say version 2 recipes should go in there too, but they should be clearly marked as such.

For example, in v2 we can generate circles easily with the polygon component, so I'd make a new "Circles 2.0" article for that.

I'd say we handle it just like FF components. If a recipe becomes obsolete due to a new version release, we'll tag it with a 1.0

After all, it might still be interesting to the 1.0 folks that don't upgrade. smile:)

Thanks ronjonnie & Carl. I might get around to finishing one or two more articles over the holidays. Still looking forward to seeing others taking up some of the wiki fun.

Dilla and everyone -- thanks for contributing! BTW, we've given the wiki more exposure in the new forum sidebar.

Awesome work thus far guys, I just wanted to give a quick tip: use the .PNG fileformat for screenshots. They will be much higher quality (no jpeg compression artifacts) and will likely be smaller filesize as well.

Good tips for choosing

Might tackle the spirals next....There's 3 methods unless I am missing one...There's
Sejtis, Mine and Byros....Then some of Volds' mods in there as well...This might be a long one....I am wondering if I should put it in sections or maybe just focus on one...

Hey Crapadilla,
re: the solid color article http://www.filterforge.com/wiki/index...lor_Layers

Is it really best to use a blend for a color picker? I thought that blends were comparatively CPU expensive.

Wouldn't a threshold be faster? Just wondering...
(I'm away from my FF station, so can't test ...)

nope, blends are one of the fastest, corvus. by all means use them for color picking. see the article on speed. i think it's stickied in one of the forums still.

Huh, and this whole time I thought that thresholds were faster. Learn something new every day.

I guess I got that belief from this article: http://www.filterforge.com/wiki/index...:_Clipping

Quote
You can think of clipping something as how the Opacity parameter works in the Blend component. However the Blend component in Filter Forge is not very suited for fast clipping because it implements alpha blending, merging and blendmodes too. Moreover we often have to preprocess the opacity mask (with contrast or similar) to get the desired overlay, thus the Threshold is much better suited for clipping operations.

Quote
If you look at the above picture (right side), you can see how the Threshold is used as a switch or clipping mechanism between two Perlin Noise sources. A third Perlin Noise source is used for Source input, or said differently: it controls which of the two other inputs we want to use. The two noise sources used for Low and High are both using computationally costly settings, but the Source input noise is not. If we were to use a Blend for this combine operation, the blend would first fetch samples from both "layers" and then blend them. However using the threshold clipping trick like above, we effectively only fetch samples when they are visible in the end result.

understood. here's the source information: http://www.filterforge.com/forum/read...10&TID=237 and it is a stickied thread in this forum.

One small thing.

On the page https://www.filterforge.com/wiki/index...op_Shadows
it says

Quote
You can control the transparency (alpha channel) of a color from the 'Color Picker' window that launches when double-clicking a color swatch: Simply set the alpha slider (which is labeled with an A) to the desired value!

A single click is enough. Unless it need double-clicks on Mac ? I dont have Mac, i can't know.

See ya all. smile;)
